The reserves were established in 1997 to act as a backup to the regular force in the case of an emergency, e.g. war or disaster. Duties are the same as of regular police offficer. There are 3000 reserve police officers in Finland. Signing the contract means a reserve police officer has to participate in training and exercises. Training is carried out to a basic syllabus. Advanced training is carried out after booked on duty. When booked on duty the reserve has the same powers as members of the regular force, and wears the same uniform as the regulars. The reserve police officer works with a regular police officer. However when not booked on duty the reserve reverts to being just John Citizen. During the training the reserves are paid an allowance and travel expences.
The reserve police officer has an insignia Taydennyspoliisi and a special badge. The weapons are the same as in use by the police.
